It was only a couple of years ago that the term 'cougar dating in the UK' was used in a hushed tone; a disapproving word we would call a women who ruthlessly hunted out younger men. Definitely not how we would look at a 'respectable' lady to behave.
Today in 2010 all the same, society is now a a lot more open minded and accepting of men and women dating who they like. Famous people including Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock, Madonna and Michelle Pfeiffer are all renowned for their flings or long-term relationships with younger men. All of these women have the power to influence the way women dress and how they cut their hair, so it's not surprising that their behaviour is also something women pick up on and think that it's actually ok, empowering and possibly even sexy to be a cougar on the hunt for her cub!
Another reason as to the reasons why cougar dating is so popular is that people have realised it can result in more fulfilled, genuine and happy long-term relationships. The raw definition on a 'cougar' is a woman on the prowl for a fling or hook-up with a younger man that is based purely on sex. I also think it is fair to say that when cougar dating was more of a taboo subject decades ago, why is it that men were always allowed to date younger women without an ounce of disapproval? A balance has been achieved and a more liberating sense of freedom for adults has been created.
